What Type of Work Will You Be Doing?

The first question to ask yourself before buying a tractor is about the type of work you plan on doing with it. Do you plan on using it to plow and maintain a small crop? Or, are you planning on using it only to mow and maintain the landscape?

If you plan on plowing and maintaining a small crop, you will most likely need a larger tractor that is capable of pulling large pieces of equipment and farm implements. The tractor you select should have a high amount of horsepower to do the hauling, and it will need to have a large enough wheelbase to keep you stationary while pulling.

However, if you are using the tractor to mow and maintain your property, the mower and bush hogger will not be as heavy as plowing equipment. You may be able to get by with a smaller tractor with less horsepower for these tasks.

How Rough Is Your Property's Terrain?

The next thing to consider when buying a tractor is the size and type of tires you will need. This decision is based largely on the roughness of your property's terrain. Is your property fairly flat with mostly grass? Or, is the landscape hilly and rocky?

If your terrain is grassy and flat, the tractor you select can use turf tires. These have a small amount of tread that can be used when there are not many obstacles on the ground.

However, if your property is hilly and rocky, you will need industrial tires that have thick tread on them. This thicker tread will give you better traction and keep the tractor stable while you drive over uneven ground.
